It seems like I've come across an interesting story about a recent incident in Niles. From what I gather, there was a fire at a residence located in the 8300 block of Ballard Road early Thursday morning (July 18th). Local firefighters suspect that the fire might have been triggered by a lightning strike. The residents reported hearing a loud noise, followed by flickering lights. It appears that the actual fire started in a small hidden area between the home's vaulted ceilings and the roof.
The firefighters did a great job handling the situation—they used pike poles to pull down parts of the ceiling to get access to and put out the flames. Thankfully, all the residents managed to evacuate safely without any injuries, and the whole firefighting operation only took around 20 minutes.
I found some photos taken by Steve Redick that really capture the scene. There are shots of different fire trucks and equipment, including a Pierce Dash CF PUC tower ladder and a Smeal quint. One picture shows a firefighter named James Leibach, who must have been part of the team working on-site. Another image gives a good look at the aftermath of the fire, showing the damage to the roof and the surrounding area.
