“Get Your Fix” Part 3 of 10: Carrier® 38APS/38APD

The Carrier® 38APS/38APD made our list of condenser coils with repeated service problems. Introduced around 2012, these units feature Carrier’s Novation® microchannel (MCHX) condenser coils, which were marketed as a “robust and cost-effective alternative” to traditional designs. While they may seem like a good deal upfront, many customers end up facing costly repairs due to frequent leaks, damage from foreign debris, and difficulty with maintenance.

Why did Carrier choose microchannel coils?

Microchannel coils are cheaper to produce and use less refrigerant, which is great for manufacturing and environmental impact. But does this come at the expense of long-term reliability? That’s something every customer should consider. At the very least, we believe you should have the option to choose a more durable coil design without compromising efficiency.

Our experience with the Carrier 38APS/38APD was one of the main reasons we started offering microchannel conversions. Our #changethechannel program lets customers upgrade their all-aluminum fin coils to more reliable copper tube, aluminum fin coils—making their unit easier to service while maintaining OEM efficiency.

We can manufacture a copper tube coil that installs with minimal re-piping and handles the same capacity as the original microchannel coil. While it requires 20–30% more refrigerant and needs to be charged via sub-cooling, it eliminates the constant leaks, unreliable repairs, and unexpected downtime that come with microchannel units.

Smaller units are available in dual and single refrigeration circuits (025–065), while larger models (070–130) are only available in dual circuits.
