New initiatives aim to develop tech skills in the current workforce and encourage a new and diverse generation to consider construction as a career
SAN FRANCISCO, July 20, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — As the construction industry continues to evolve, Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) is stepping up its efforts to equip workers with the digital tools needed to stay competitive. The company recently launched two new programs, the Construction Master Class and the Autodesk Construction Cloud Learning Center, aimed at upskilling current professionals and attracting a fresh wave of talent to the field.
The construction sector is facing a growing labor shortage and a widening digital skills gap. A recent survey by the Associated General Contractors of America and Autodesk found that 89% of U.S. construction firms struggle to fill hourly positions, while 86% have difficulty hiring for salaried roles. Globally, similar challenges are emerging, with many companies citing a lack of skilled labor as a major obstacle.
To address these issues, Autodesk has introduced two key learning platforms. The Construction Master Class offers free online tutorials led by industry leaders, providing practical insights into best practices, workflows, and career development. Meanwhile, the Autodesk Construction Cloud Learning Center provides accessible, multilingual courses covering essential digital tools like Autodesk Build, Takeoff, and Docs, helping users improve their technical proficiency and project management skills.
Since its launch in 2021, the Learning Center has seen over 42,000 enrollments from 134 countries, showing strong global interest. In addition to these programs, Autodesk has also partnered with trade unions and educational institutions through the Membership Training Provider Program, offering access to software like Revit and Autodesk Construction Cloud. This initiative helps expand BIM and CAD training opportunities across the industry.
Another notable effort is the Make It Real program, which encourages young people to engage with real-world construction challenges. With funding opportunities like the Building Changemakers Giveaway, this initiative supports aspiring builders and designers by providing resources for education, safety gear, and other essential needs.
Industry experts highlight the importance of digital skills in today’s construction landscape. “There’s a huge demand for workers who can use technology effectively,†said Ronald McGuire from the International Training Institute. “Autodesk’s resources will help us train existing members and bring in new talent quickly.â€
Allison Scott, director of customer experience at Autodesk, emphasized the urgency of addressing the labor shortage. “With nearly 41% of U.S. construction workers expected to retire by 2031, we need to invest in the next generation now,†she said. “Our learning initiatives are designed to help companies adapt and stay ahead in an increasingly digital industry.â€
Autodesk continues to lead the way in transforming how the world is built, offering innovative solutions that empower professionals across architecture, engineering, manufacturing, and more. Through its commitment to education and training, the company is helping shape a more skilled and diverse construction workforce for the future.
