The Courier-News recently published a story about the East Dundee Fire Protection District officially starting construction on a new fire station. This marks a major milestone for the community, which has long awaited an updated facility to better serve its residents. EAST DUNDEE — Mark Guth, now 75, remembers the day the old fire station was built on Third Street in downtown East Dundee over 60 years ago. At the time, he was just 13 years old, and his father was part of the fire department staff. Today, Guth is the president of the East Dundee Fire Protection District Board of Trustees, having retired from the fire service many years ago. On Tuesday, Guth joined fellow trustees, village officials, firefighters, and local residents at a groundbreaking ceremony for the new station. Fire Chief Steve Schmitendorf expressed his excitement, saying, “Today’s the day, finally. It’s very exciting. It’s something that’s been a dream for a long time.” The new station, funded by a $5.5 million referendum approved by voters in November, will be located near Routes 25 and 72. Officials believe this location is more central to the district, which covers areas as far east as Higgins Road and Interstate 90. The site includes three acres of land with an existing building, so the village will contribute $100,000 annually for 20 years to help offset the cost of the bonds used for construction. Construction is expected to take approximately 10 months, and the new station will serve not only East Dundee but also the villages of South Barrington and Barrington Hills, as well as parts of unincorporated Kane and Cook counties.
