The Courier-News recently published an article highlighting the East Dundee Fire Protection District's groundbreaking ceremony for a new fire station. This long-awaited project marks a significant milestone for the community, as it aims to better serve the growing needs of the area. EAST DUNDEE — Mark Guth, now 75, remembers the day the original fire station was built on Third Street in downtown East Dundee over six decades ago. At just 13 years old, he watched his father, who was part of the fire department, help lay the foundation. Today, Guth serves as the president of the East Dundee Fire Protection District Board of Trustees, having spent much of his life connected to the department. On Tuesday, Guth joined fellow trustees, village officials, firefighters, and local residents at the site where the new station will be constructed. The event was filled with excitement and anticipation, especially from Fire Chief Steve Schmitendorf, who called the day “very exciting” and described the project as a dream that had been years in the making. The new station, funded by a $5.5 million referendum approved by voters in November, will be located near Routes 25 and 72. Officials believe this location is more central to serving the entire district, which stretches eastward to Higgins Road and Interstate 90. The site includes three acres of land with an existing building, and in exchange, the village will contribute $100,000 annually for 20 years to help offset the cost of the bonds used to finance the construction. Construction is expected to take approximately 10 months, with the goal of completing the facility by next year. The new station will serve not only East Dundee but also the villages of South Barrington and Barrington Hills, as well as parts of unincorporated Kane and Cook counties.
