For Shante Wilson and her two-year-old son JR, the department's kindness made this Christmas truly unforgettable. "When I saw the firefighters coming with all the gifts in their hands, I was overwhelmed with emotion. I wanted to cry, but I didn’t want my son to see me sad—because it was really tears of joy," Wilson shared. The family received not only toys for JR but also a full bin of groceries from Station One on the west side of Rockford. For many, this gesture was more than just a gift—it was a reminder that they are not alone, especially during difficult times. Firefighters say that helping families like Wilson’s is part of their mission. "It goes hand in hand with what we do every day. We’re always out there on the streets, dealing with emergencies, so it’s nice to be able to show up in a joyful way too," one firefighter explained. The department raised over $9,000 through donations, which were used to help twelve local families during the holidays. As JR opens his presents today, Wilson is still in awe that her name appeared on some of the packages. "It’s such a beautiful thing to see. Just watching my son open all his gifts—it’s going to be the light of my life," she said, clearly moved by the generosity of the community and the fire department.
