Chicago Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff has announced his resignation, marking a significant shift in the city's fire department leadership. The news was first reported by CBS Chicago, who revealed that Hoff, one of the last remaining figures from the Daley administration, submitted his resignation on Wednesday.
Hoff, known for his strong stance against closing fire stations or reducing staffing levels, will be replaced by Jose Santiago, a former head of the Office of Emergency Management and Communications. Santiago had previously left the city when Mayor Rahm Emanuel took office, partly due to criticism over the handling of the Groundhog Day blizzard last year.
The Sun-Times highlighted that Hoff’s decision came at a critical time, just as firefighters were preparing for tough contract negotiations with the mayor. A close source said Hoff chose to retire on his own terms, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of his father’s death—a firefighter who died in the line of duty. “Thirty-five years is long enough,†the source said. “He wants to go teach firemen and keep them safe.â€
At a union meeting, Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2 President Thomas Ryan confirmed Hoff’s planned departure, stating that the commissioner had told him it was time to move on. Hoff’s exit leaves a void in the department, especially as tensions rise between the city and firefighters over staffing and working conditions.
