Baosteel successfully trial-produced ultra-thin secondary cold-rolled shadow mask strip

Baosteel has successfully launched its first batch of secondary cold-rolled shadow mask strip products with a thickness of 0.15 mm, which have been applied in trial production by relevant enterprises. The product's composition and performance meet the required technical standards, marking a significant breakthrough as it fills the gap in domestically produced shadow mask strips with a typical thickness of 0.17 mm or less. This development is a major step forward for China's domestic steel industry. Shadow mask strips are one of the most critical metal components in color picture tubes. Their production involves a highly complex and demanding process, often referred to as "the art of steel." Currently, China produces 80 million shadow masks annually, with an annual demand for shadow mask strips exceeding 40,000 tons—accounting for over 50% of global usage. As a result, China has become the world's largest consumer of shadow mask strips. For years, however, the market was dominated by imported products from Japan and Germany, leading to high costs and limited supply. Since 2001, Baosteel established a dedicated research team to develop the technology for producing shadow mask strip steel. Through continuous efforts, they successfully developed a one-pass cold rolling method, and more than ten specifications have been tested and validated. In the second quarter of 2004, the 1420 unit at Baosteel began small-scale production of cold-rolled shadow mask strips, which received positive market feedback. However, due to technical limitations, Baosteel was unable to produce strips with thicknesses below 0.17 mm, forcing domestic manufacturers to rely on imports. To address this issue, Baosteel initiated a new research project focused on secondary cold-rolled shadow mask strips in June of last year. After overcoming challenges related to difficult process parameters, precise chemical composition control, thickness accuracy, and surface quality requirements, the company achieved a successful trial run. In September of last year, Baosteel completed the trial production of the first batch of 0.15 mm secondary cold-rolled shadow mask strips. These were then sent to Xianyang Rainbow Electronic Stencil Factory and Nanjing Electronic Stencil Technology Co., Ltd. for production trials, marking a key milestone in the development of China’s domestic shadow mask strip industry.
