Baosteel has successfully launched its first batch of secondary cold-rolled shadow mask strips with a thickness of 0.15 mm, which have been applied in trial production by several enterprises. The product's composition and performance meet the required technical standards, marking a significant breakthrough as it fills the gap in domestically produced shadow mask strips with a typical thickness of 0.17 mm or less. This development is a major step forward for China's domestic steel industry.
Shadow mask strips are among the most critical metal components in color picture tubes. Their production involves a highly complex and demanding process, often referred to as "the art of steel." China produces approximately 80 million shadow masks annually, with an annual demand for shadow mask strips exceeding 40,000 tons—more than half of the global consumption. As a result, China has become the world's largest consumer of shadow mask strips. For many years, however, the market was dominated by imported products from Japan and Germany, leading to high costs and limited domestic supply.
Since 2001, Baosteel has been working on developing the technology for producing shadow mask strips. Through continuous research, the company successfully developed a one-pass cold rolling method and tested over ten specifications. In the second quarter of 2004, the 1420 unit at Baosteel began small-scale production of cold-rolled shadow mask strips, which received positive market feedback. However, due to technical limitations, Baosteel was unable to produce strips with thicknesses below 0.17 mm, forcing domestic manufacturers to rely heavily on imports.
To address this challenge, Baosteel initiated a new research project on secondary cold-rolled shadow mask strips in June of last year. Over time, the team overcame key challenges, including precise chemical composition control, tight thickness tolerances, and high surface quality requirements. These efforts laid the foundation for successful trial production. In September of last year, Baosteel completed the first batch of 0.15 mm secondary cold-rolled shadow mask strips, and by November, the product was sent to Xianyang Rainbow Electronic Stencil Factory and Nanjing Electronic Stencil Technology Co., Ltd. for trial operations. This marks a crucial milestone in China's push for self-reliance in critical electronic materials.
