As I sit here reflecting on what makes Autodesk such a special place to work, I’m reminded of how deeply ingrained innovation is within our DNA. It’s not just about creating cutting-edge technology—it’s about fostering an environment where creativity thrives, and employees feel empowered to push boundaries. Recently, we were honored by Fast Company as one of the Best Workplaces for Innovators in 2023, and I couldn’t be prouder of the hard work and dedication that led to this recognition.
At Autodesk, innovation isn’t just a buzzword; it’s woven into everything we do. Whether it’s improving internal processes, developing groundbreaking products, or reimagining how businesses operate, our teams consistently rise to the challenge. This award validates our commitment to nurturing an environment where employees can thrive and contribute meaningfully.
One of the standout initiatives we’ve implemented is our Flex Forward workplace model. Instead of following the traditional “return-to-office†approach, we took a different path. Flex Forward gives employees the flexibility to work from virtually anywhere, provided it aligns with our legal operations. However, we still value face-to-face interactions when they truly matter. These intentional gatherings are designed to strengthen connections, build community, and drive impactful business outcomes.
To ensure our physical spaces support this vision, we’ve transformed our offices into hubs of productivity and collaboration. From quiet zones for deep focus to collaborative spaces for brainstorming sessions, our redesigned offices cater to every type of work style. Additionally, we introduced the Autodesk Conference Experience (ACE), which acts like a personal concierge for in-person events. Teams can customize their meetings, room setups, and team-building activities through ACE, making the most of their time together.
This flexible approach has been a game-changer for attracting top talent, particularly from underrepresented groups. Since announcing Flex Forward, we’ve seen a remarkable uptick in job applications. Our belief is unwavering: diversity fuels innovation and drives business success.
Another initiative that sets us apart is the NEXT LEVEL program, spearheaded by Ramona Blake, our Senior Director of Diversity & Belonging. Recognizing that diversity extends beyond recruitment, we’re investing in developing the next generation of leaders from underrepresented backgrounds. Through personalized leadership coaching and mentorship, NEXT LEVEL equips participants with the skills needed for senior roles.
To test their newfound knowledge, participants recently engaged in an exciting capstone competition called “Innovation Idol.†Teams were tasked with proposing a machine learning solution for a real-world Autodesk challenge. While many participants had limited exposure to ML before this, they quickly adapted and delivered impressive pitches. Not only did this exercise yield immediate benefits for the company, but it also equipped these leaders with valuable insights and experiences that will shape our future innovations.
But innovation doesn’t stop at leadership development. At the Autodesk Foundation, we’re democratizing employee-led grantmaking. Partnering with Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), we’ve empowered these groups to distribute unrestricted funds to nonprofits of their choosing. Each step of the process—from selecting recipients to evaluating impact—was carefully designed to maximize effectiveness. For instance, the Autodesk Latinx Network supported LatinaGeeks, encouraging Latinas to pursue tech careers. Meanwhile, the Autodesk Black Network and Young Professionals Network joined forces to back Techbridge Girls, inspiring BIPOC girls to explore STEM fields.
These efforts are just the beginning. By investing in diversity, equity, and inclusion, we’re laying the groundwork for a brighter future—one where innovation knows no bounds. At Autodesk, we’re not just building tools; we’re building a better world. And I’m grateful to be part of a team that values creativity, collaboration, and progress above all else.
