Future global flame retardant market demand will maintain growth and development prospects

According to a recent report by Freedonia Consulting, the global demand for flame retardants is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 4.8% over the next five years, reaching 2.2 million tons by 2009. The market value is projected to increase at an even faster pace, with an average annual growth of 8.5%. Among the various types, high-value special flame retardants such as bromine-based, phosphorus-based, telluride, and manganese compounds are anticipated to maintain or expand their market share. In contrast, the demand for aluminum-based flame retardants will rise more slowly, while chlorinated flame retardants are expected to show the lowest growth rate. Freedonia also highlighted that stricter environmental regulations in Europe and the U.S. have significantly impacted the use of chlorine-, fluorine-, and bromine-containing flame retardants. As a result, these products face increasing scrutiny and restrictions. In Western Europe, the demand for flame retardants is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 3%, reaching 505,000 tons by 2009. In North America, the growth rate is slightly higher, at 3.4%, with demand expected to reach 715,000 tons by the same year. In contrast, developing countries are less affected by environmental regulations, and their domestic markets remain relatively open. Export demand, however, remains a key driver for these regions. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to see the strongest growth, with an average annual increase of 7% in flame retardant demand. By 2009, the region’s consumption is projected to reach 810,000 tons, surpassing North America to become the world's largest flame retardant consumer market. Leading manufacturers like Albemarle, Chemtura, and ICL have recently raised prices to offset rising production costs. ICL announced a price increase of 15% to 30% effective October 15, covering products such as tetrabromobisphenol A and decabromodiphenyl oxide. Meanwhile, Albemarle and Chemtura increased their bromine production capacity by 40% starting October 1, signaling a strategic move to meet growing demand.
