On a crisp Sunday morning in La Grange Park (October 4th), I had the unique opportunity to witness a live-fire training session organized by the local fire departments. The event took place in a two-story wooden house set to be demolished for a new construction project. It was not just any ordinary building—it stood as the oldest structure in that area of La Grange Park. As crews from both La Grange and La Grange Park fire departments conducted several drills simulating fires on different floors, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when the granddaughter of the original owners shared her memories of cows walking down the dirt roads in front of the house.
The training began with some initial smoke filling the air, and it was going smoothly until an unexpected visitor made its presence known—a raccoon emerged from the roof eaves and bolted before the flames could get too intense. It was a small but memorable moment amidst the serious training. I’m grateful to all the firefighters present for allowing me to observe and learn.
Attached are some photos taken by Eric Haak, capturing the intensity and dedication of these firefighters. One image shows a female firefighter receiving instructions from her mentor, highlighting the importance of learning in real-time situations. Another photo captures a firefighter exiting a burning house during the drill, showcasing the bravery required for such exercises. A raccoon’s quick escape from the abandoned house is immortalized in another shot, adding an element of surprise to the day’s proceedings.
The training sessions were intense yet educational, providing invaluable experience for the firefighters. It was heartening to see how prepared they were, even in simulated scenarios. Thanks again to everyone involved for their hospitality and commitment to safety and preparedness.
