Anthony Rose, a brave member of the Granite Mountain Hotshots who lost his life in the tragic Yarnell Fire on June 30th, finally came home on Wednesday evening. His ashes arrived at the Waukegan Regional Airport aboard a plane, accompanied by a fellow Granite Mountain Hotshot, two US Forestry officers, and a group from the Phoenix Fire Department's honor guard.
The emotional homecoming was marked by a solemn ceremony attended by hundreds of local firefighters, members of the Axemen Motorcycle Club, local law enforcement officers, and countless community members who gathered to pay their respects. The flag that had been flown during the recent memorial service held in Phoenix was ceremoniously handed over to Anthony’s family alongside his ashes.
Images captured during the ceremony tell a powerful story. Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk both documented the touching moments, capturing the respect and reverence shown by everyone present. One particularly striking image shows the dignified transfer of the flag, while another captures the somber faces of those who had come to honor Anthony’s memory.
Following the ceremony, a poignant procession made its way through the streets, led by police vehicles, motorcycles, and fire trucks. They escorted a limousine carrying Anthony’s family to the funeral home in nearby Zion. The entire event was a heartfelt tribute to a man who had given so much for his community and country.
