Saturday afternoon, the Palatine Fire Department received a call about a brush fire in the Cook County Forest Preserve region, located roughly between Lake-Cook Road and Rand Road. The Battalion 8 of Palatine Fire Department set up operations on Dee Road, just west of Rand and off Lake-Cook. They arrived with Engine 82 and Lake Zurich Engine 4. When they reached the scene, they discovered a fire raging through tall grass in an area that is predominantly marshland, with nearly two feet of soggy ground covering much of it. I tried embedding a map here, but I couldn't get it to work properly. You can view the larger map if you click on the link provided. Due to these challenging conditions, using brush rigs was impossible, and firefighters accessed the area on foot until the Cook County Forest Preserve District's Wildland Team arrived. A few pickups equipped with skid-mounted units showed up, along with an ATV carrying a small tank and a booster line. One of the photos I took shows Lake Zurich Engine 4 responding to the auto-aid call. They were connected to a hydrant and stretched a hose line of several hundred feet into the grass. Larry Shapiro spent a couple of hours at the scene and managed to capture several images. Another image features members of the Cook County Forest Preserve District Wildland team heading into the brush. The fire was in a vast field that mostly consisted of muddy marshlands. High winds complicated firefighting efforts, constantly pushing the flames towards new fuel sources. After Palatine committed all its suppression companies to the incident and had been working for over three hours, they called a MABAS Brush Fire Box Alarm to request additional personnel and coverage for their town. As the fire intensified, low humidity, extremely dry conditions, and strong winds created perfect conditions for a brush fire to spread rapidly. Additional units were dispatched to the scene to ensure no structures were endangered. The fire spread eastward, threatening several businesses along Rand Road. Palatine Engine 82 was positioned at a car dealership located at the intersection of Rand Road and Lake-Cook Road. It was supplying Quint 81, which had stretched 800 feet of attack line into the wooded and grassy area. Firefighters managed to stop the fire from spreading to any buildings and successfully extinguished the flames just after 10 PM. I'll have more images available in a gallery on Sunday, along with a video from the scene. This brush fire was a challenging situation due to the terrain and weather conditions, but our firefighters worked tirelessly to contain it before it caused any significant damage.
