Excerpts from Haixusa.com:

This old snorkel fire truck, no matter where it is, always draws a crowd. For 45 years, the U.S. truck served the New Lenox Fire Protection District, located southwest of Chicago, completing numerous missions. In 2016, former HAIX® CEO Ewald Haimerl bought the New Lenox Snorkel and set it on a long journey from the U.S. to Germany.

The truck traveled 1,200 miles from Illinois to the Port of Charleston, South Carolina. Due to its large size and low fuel efficiency, the 31-gallon engine required multiple refueling stops, especially while crossing the Appalachian Mountains. Along the way, there were several police checks—not just because it was moving slower than usual, but also because of its massive size. Once it reached Charleston, the truck was shipped across the Atlantic to Bremerhaven, Germany, where it was held up in customs for a week before being driven 7 hours to its new home at HAIX® headquarters in Mainburg. Extensive restoration work has since been done to bring it back to full working condition.

Among his collection, the most eye-catching model is a GMC pumper built in 1942 and originally used on a U.S. airbase in Sweden. This vehicle is the oldest in the HAIX® Oldtimer Fleet. It served at a U.S. Air Base in northern Sweden for over 30 years. After a long period at a used car dealer, HAIX® gave it a second life. With the top open, it becomes a standout at trade shows and other HAIX® events.

The Ford TK, built in 1949, has been part of the HAIX Oldtimer Fleet since late 2018. Before that, it was used as a promotional vehicle by an insurance company in Georgia. Most people, however, are transported in the Opel Blitz, built in 1965. The small light fire engine LLF can carry up to eleven people, including the driver.

In addition to the four fire engines, the HAIX old-timer fleet includes two police vehicles, which are considered “Young Timers” due to their relatively recent manufacturing dates. These include a 1995 Chevrolet Impala 300 SS police car and a 1993 Harley Davidson police motorcycle, both of which had fascinating journeys to Germany.

The Chevrolet Impala was originally owned by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and used as a backup patrol car before being retired. It was later taken to the Swiss honorary consul in Zurich, then moved to the U.S. consulate in Munich under private ownership, until it finally arrived at HAIX® in Mainburg. Its comfort and sirens always make it a hit at local events.

HAIX® continues to preserve the history of vintage and classic fire trucks and police vehicles, with plans to expand its collection in the future!
