A local volunteer organization that has been providing medical and rescue services for almost 80 years is currently facing serious financial challenges.
The Kenosha County Scout Leaders Rescue Squad, which was founded in the late 1930s, is now operating at a deficit due to increasing costs related to equipment, maintenance, and insurance.
The group consists of around 15 members, split into two divisions: Emergency Medical Technicians and Underwater Search and Rescue.
Scout Leaders offers emergency management services for events at a rate of $85 per hour and provides backup medical support and mutual aid to Kenosha and neighboring counties. They're often among the first to respond during water-related emergencies.
Funds from these contracts go toward vehicle maintenance, fuel, medications, liability insurance, and workers' compensation.
This isn't the first time the organization has faced financial difficulties. In 2009, the community rallied together with donations to keep them running.
In 2005, they also suffered a major setback when a fire destroyed three vehicles and a 16-foot rescue boat, causing over $178,000 in equipment losses and another $150,000 in building damage.
According to an article from the March 2, 1947, edition of the Milwaukee Journal, the group was created by Howard Gatley, then an executive with the Kenosha Boy Scouts Council, following a tragic train accident in 1930. The collision killed 14 people and injured over 100.
Originally part of the Boys Scouts of America and the Red Cross, Scout Leaders eventually became an independent nonprofit service provider.
Each spring, the organization holds a concert fundraiser, though the date and location for this year's event have not yet been announced.
To help support their ongoing efforts, they've launched a GoFundMe campaign. You can visit the site and search for “Kenosha County Scout Leaders Rescue†to make a donation.
