The research team led by Professor Zheng Jinyang from the Institute of Chemical Machinery at Zhejiang University has made a groundbreaking achievement by developing the world's largest fixed hydrogen storage tank, a 5,000-liter high-pressure (42 MPa) stationary hydrogen storage system. This innovation marks a significant leap forward in hydrogen energy technology and positions China as a global leader in this critical field.
Previously, the United States had achieved a maximum capacity of only 411 liters for similar high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks. Now, the new system developed by Zhejiang University not only surpasses this limit but also demonstrates advanced engineering and safety standards. The tank has already been installed at the first hydrogen production and refueling station in the Yongfeng Hi-Tech Development Zone in Zhongguancun, Beijing, and is now actively supporting the Olympic event with reliable hydrogen supply.
Professor Zheng Jinyang emphasized that for hydrogen vehicles to gain widespread public acceptance, they must be both cost-effective and highly reliable. Moreover, the refueling process needs to be as quick and convenient as traditional gasoline refueling. The high-pressure hydrogen storage tank developed by his team meets these demands perfectly. It can fill a hydrogen-powered bus in just 15 minutes, significantly improving the efficiency and practicality of hydrogen fueling.
