China Haitian Group, located in Ningbo, Zhejiang, is the largest plastics machinery manufacturer in the country and even in the world. Last year, its sales reached 3.28 billion yuan, accounting for more than 20% of the total sales of the plastics industry in China. Surprisingly, when talking about last year's business situation, the chairman Zhang Jingzhang mentioned a “take the wheat city” thing: last year they received an order for an electric injection molding machine with a total value of US$15 million, but In the end, they gave up, because some of them didn't have them yet and they couldn't do it. Zhang Jingzhang’s words inadvertently touched the soft underbelly of the entire press industry—the lack of core technology.

Long-term imitation of the road

"Molding machines are the areas in the entire plastics industry that best reflect the value of core technologies, but in this field, we hardly have important core technologies." said Wang Xingtian, a renowned expert in press technology and a professor at Beijing University of Chemical Technology. Just one set of data has become the evidence of his remarks: In 2003, the export volume of China's presses reached 10,800 sets, valued at 4.821 billion US dollars. At the same time, 21,400 sets of plastics machines were imported, valued at USD 32.551 billion.

The independent innovation of technology includes two aspects: one is originality, that is, innovation of core technology; the other is inherited innovation, that is, partial technological innovation, and the most critical is the development of core technologies. According to Wu Daming, a professor at Beijing University of Chemical Technology who has long studied the development of China's plastics machinery industry, for a long time, China's plastics products mainly follow the path of imitation, and most companies do not have independent intellectual property rights. There is a saying in the press industry that domestic key products and key technologies imported from China's plastic products will leave only a pile of steel.

It is said that the highly competitive press industry should be a field with high technological content. However, many plastic press companies in China are taking a path to win by volume and take technical innovation to the side. Japan's Nissei Corporation is not the world's best technology press company, but they have five technical research centers, technical engineers account for 46.1% of the total number of employees, and have 1,470 patented technologies. Looking back at the domestic market, Ningbo Haitai Group is one of the top three companies in China with a strong technological expertise, but it has only 18 patented technologies and only three key invention patents.

Independent innovation lacks motivation

"The special structure of the plastics industry chain has severely restricted the press's independent innovation impulse." When talking about the difficulties of independent innovation in the industry, Professor Wang Xingtian described it. The market for plastic products is in the plastics processing field, but the enterprises in this area are too small, the production capacity is too scattered, and the industrial concentration is not high, resulting in low-level market competition. A considerable part of the product companies only produce daily-use plastic products with little technical content and simple industrial supplies, and rely on the advantages of low labor cost to enter the market at a low price. As a result, most downstream product companies lack the ability to use high-tech presses to improve product quality, and are only satisfied with general processing equipment. There is no demand for product companies, and it is difficult for the press makers' technological innovation to obtain market response, and the innovation impulse of presses companies will naturally be greatly inhibited.

Zhang Jingzhang, chairman of Haitian Group, a leading company in the domestic press industry, said that Haitian Group has been tracking international advanced technologies and nurturing its own core technologies through the introduction and digestion of foreign technologies. However, some other domestic companies simply followed Haitian Group and developed a deformed technology development pattern of “Haitian sees foreign countries and domestic looking Haitian”, resulting in a very serious homogenization of domestic presses.

Prof. Wu Daming listed a series of presses that require core technologies: precision injection molding machines, one-step injection blow-blow units, large-diameter solid-wall tubes and corrugated tube production lines, and twin-screw compounding and granulation equipment. These high-end products all require breakthroughs in core technologies. However, few domestic companies produce.

What is somewhat gratifying is that with the development of the market, more and more press companies have begun to work hard on technological innovation. Haitian Group has just developed a successful second-platen injection molding machine, which can greatly save steel; the Changchun Yinghua Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in cooperation with Inner Mongolia Mengxi Hi-tech Group Co., Ltd. The world's first production line of 3,000 tons of carbon dioxide copolymers, to solve the carbon dioxide and ring Mass transfer, heat transfer and separation problems in oxide bulk copolymerization; Shaanxi Qinchuan Plastic Machinery Factory invested nearly RMB 10 million to develop a 6-layer co-extruded blow molding machine, making it the third company in the world to produce this product. enterprise……

Breakthrough in core technology is difficult, but it must be done. This is the only way for the future development of the press industry, and it is also the consensus of the industry.
