The young R&D personnel can hardly imagine that, more than 30 years ago, Weichai’s R&D team had only 60 people. Although the name was “Instituteâ€, most of the work was market-supported and not “R&Dâ€. After the Steyr engine came in, what he could do was to change the surrounding structures such as brackets and flywheel housings to ensure smooth installation.
Zhang Jiyuan, vice president of Weichai Power, said that it was a U-tube for measuring pressure, measuring the time of consumption of beakers, stopwatches and balances. There are eight rigs in the laboratory, which are still incomplete. The technology bought from Europe was taken carelessly, but it was not dismantled at the end. Before and after 1998, the company was on the brink of bankruptcy, a large number of university students had gone, and the Institute was fragmented.
At the time of the crisis, Tan Xuguang, Chairman of the Board of Directors, stepped in and turned the tide. Weichai quickly got rid of the business difficulties and embarked on the fast track of development. The business was profitable, there was more money in the pocket, and R&D infrastructure was put on the agenda. In 2002, more than 20 new rigs were added in one go. At the same time, they began recruiting troops and expanding their ranks. After more than ten years of development, the scale of today's R&D system is only available.
It is understood that there are currently more than 1,600 R&D personnel in Weichai, among which more than 60% are masters and doctors. Every research and development has a complete process, advanced software and hardware equipment, and a strong team support. The equipment is good, the method is right, and the staff is awesome. Of course, the developed product has high reliability and excellent performance and fully meets customer needs. It can be said that the strong R&D strength is an important source of power for Weichai in the past decade.
At the grass-roots level, the introduction of technology is the only way for domestic companies, including Weichai, to develop. Buying technology can shorten the gap with the leading companies. However, how to grasp the relationship between technology introduction and independent innovation, and how to make the genuine purchase become its own, requires practice and wisdom.
In terms of Steyr technology, today's WP10 is by no means the WD615 30 years ago. In addition to the two bolts on the main bearing and the connecting rod, the original design was inherited. The other parts had no trace of Steyr, and all of them were imprinted with the mark of Weichai. European exotics became independent products of Weichai. , Become more adaptable to the needs of Chinese customers.
The key to the introduction of technology is to digest, absorb and boldly innovate, to become its own technological heritage, and to cultivate its own specialty products. In this process, Weichai not only learned the advanced technologies of others, but also developed methods.
Nowadays, Weichai's R&D process is quite mature, with more than 800 R&D standards. When foreign technology is introduced, foreign companies' standards are referenced: norms are ubiquitous, and under a unified process, R&D personnel cooperate with each other and efficiency is increased. Chai recognized the importance of R&D norms.
In the stage of enlightenment developed independently by Weichai, Weichai knows its own deficiencies and seeks the direction of exploration through the introduction of technology and exposure to advanced enterprises.
Stepping global
The pace of chase has never stopped. Until today, Weichai can confidently say that technology is not inferior to that of European and American companies, and that products are more distinctive - in line with the needs of the Chinese market, reliability development standards are higher than those of international counterparts, and fuel-efficient environmental protection standards lead China.
With decades of introduction, fusion and innovation, Weichai has fully autonomous forward development capabilities, and its simulation design capability has reached the international level. It has realized the leap from experience design to digital design. The independently developed engine brain ECU can be comparable to international counterparts... ... It can be said that technology reserves can not only meet the needs of the domestic market, but also fully have the ability to enter the international market.
Taking emissions technology as an example, Weichai has the capability to independently develop Euro VI products, and in April 2014, it passed the British Commercial Vehicle Quality Certification (VCA certification). This is the most authoritative certification in the international industry, which means Weichai's commercialization of Euro VI has taken another step.
The current R&D focus has shifted from satisfying the domestic market to laying out the international market. In the future, our technical planning will certainly be oriented towards the international market. This is an inevitable result of Weichai's internationalization strategy, and it is also an inevitable historical development of introduction, absorption, and output. The India factory and the Ethiopian technology export project brought products to the local area. Although the blood can be traced back to Steyr technology, the body has already been chopped up. This can be regarded as a classic example of technology import and output in the history of Chinese industry.
Of course, India and Ethiopia are emerging economies. Weichai's technical level can cope with local regulations and it is not enough to show our strength. However, the successful test of water in the Commonwealth of Independent States and Eastern Europe has injected great confidence in the world.
In retrospect, the upgrading of domestic emissions regulations is not a challenge for Weichai, but an opportunity. It is an excellent opportunity to free up R&D reserves.
