I just got this update from Larry Shapiro regarding the early morning house fire in Prospect Heights:
The fire broke out around 3 AM today at a residence on 1201 N. Stratford Road, near Rand Road. Firefighters from Prospect Heights FD were initially called to the scene after reports of heavy flames and thick smoke coming from the house. Tragically, there was an immediate concern for a 14-year-old boy who was reportedly trapped inside while the rest of the family was already outside.
Several police officers tried to enter the burning building to locate the boy but had to retreat due to extreme heat and smoke conditions. Arlington Heights Engine 2 arrived first and found the fire raging fiercely in the central part of the house. Unfortunately, the area lacks fire hydrants, so water supplies had to be drawn from nearby streets. At one point, Engine 2 encountered mechanical problems that temporarily disrupted the water flow to the hoses. Backup support came in from Prospect Heights Tower 9 to maintain pressure.
As the situation escalated, a Box Alarm was activated, bringing additional resources including more ambulances. Both adult occupants of the house and three police officers needed medical attention and were transported to hospitals. There was also a dedicated ambulance on standby in case the boy was located.
Thankfully, it was later confirmed that the boy wasn't home during the fire. Two individuals were taken to the hospital for treatment. The entire neighborhood was enveloped in chaos as firefighters battled the blaze throughout the night.
