On the afternoon of August 16, China's first fully independent 1.5 MW pitch-controlled wind turbine capable of withstanding typhoons rolled off the production line in Zhongshan, Guangdong. This milestone marks a significant breakthrough in the industrial development of large-scale wind turbines in China. Compared to imported or joint-venture models, the new turbine reduces production costs by over 20%, making it more competitive in both domestic and international markets.
Developed and manufactured by Guangdong Mingyang Wind Power Technology Co., Ltd. in the Zhongshan Torch High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, this turbine is the first in China to fully adapt to local wind conditions and climate challenges. Designed with the lowest possible development cost in mind, it can withstand extreme weather such as typhoons, sandstorms, and cold temperatures. The turbine represents a new generation of wind power technology with world-leading performance and full intellectual property rights.
Compared to European-designed turbines operating under similar extreme conditions, the Mingyang model generates 15% to 20% more electricity. It has also been certified by Germanischer Lloyd, one of the world’s leading wind energy certification bodies. Zhang Chuanwei, chairman of Mingyang Electric Group, revealed that the company's annual wind turbine production capacity has reached 450 units, with an estimated target of 1,000 units by 2010.
China is rich in wind energy resources, with more than 1 billion kilowatts available for development. The government has set a target of 50 million kilowatts of installed wind power capacity by 2020. Over the next 13 years, annual investment in domestic wind power equipment is expected to exceed 50 billion yuan, with annual installations surpassing 5 million kilowatts.
