On the afternoon of August 16, China's first fully independent typhoon-resistant 1.5 MW pitch-controlled wind turbine rolled off the production line in Zhongshan, Guangdong. This milestone marks a significant breakthrough in the industrial development of large-scale wind turbines in China. Compared to imported and joint-venture products, this turbine has reduced production costs by over 20%, making it more competitive in both domestic and international markets.
Developed and manufactured by Guangdong Mingyang Wind Power Technology Co., Ltd., located in the Zhongshan Torch Technology Development Zone, this unit is the first in China to fully adapt to local wind conditions and climate. Designed with the goal of minimizing development costs, it can withstand extreme weather, including typhoons, sandstorms, and freezing temperatures. The turbine represents a new generation of wind power technology with world-class performance and full intellectual property rights.
Compared to European-designed turbines operating under similar extreme conditions, the new model offers a 15% to 20% increase in power output. It has also received certification from Germanischer Lloyd, one of the most respected authorities in wind energy technology worldwide.
Zhang Chuanwei, chairman of Mingyang Electric Group, revealed that the company’s annual wind turbine production capacity has reached 450 units. With continued growth, the company expects to produce 1,000 units in 2010.
China is rich in wind resources, with an estimated potential of over 1 billion kilowatts. The government has set a target of installing 50 million kilowatts of wind power capacity by 2020. Over the next 13 years, annual investment in domestic wind power equipment is expected to exceed 50 billion yuan, with annual installed capacity surpassing 5 million kilowatts. This project not only highlights China’s growing expertise in renewable energy but also signals its increasing role on the global stage.
