On April 22, a heated dispute unfolded outside the Dongfeng Automobile service station in Nanning, Guangxi. The incident began when two car owners, Mr. Mo and Mr. Lu, blocked the entrance of the service center for over three hours after the police intervened to mediate. The conflict stemmed from repeated engine failures in their imported Dongfeng Tianlong tractor, which they claim are due to serious quality issues.
The vehicle, purchased in December 2006 for 375,000 RMB, was equipped with a French Renault engine. However, just months later, in June 2007, the engine suffered a critical failure at 85,000 kilometers when a valve fell into the cylinder, causing the engine to be scrapped. The manufacturer replaced the engine, but the problem resurfaced in March 2008, when the newly installed engine failed again at 105,000 kilometers. This time, technicians found a cracked valve that also caused internal damage. Both owners believe the recurring issue points to a design or manufacturing defect in the engine.
According to Mr. Mo, the tractor is used regularly for transporting steel between Nanning and Guangzhou on highways, and under normal conditions, there should be no mechanical problems. He emphasized that the vehicle has not yet reached the 200,000-kilometer warranty limit, so the manufacturer should replace the entire engine rather than just repair it. However, the company refused to comply with this demand, leading the owners to take drastic action by blocking the service station's entrance.
The service station manager, Mr. Zhu, defended the company’s position, stating that the issue lies with the manufacturer, not the service center. He claimed that the first engine failure was due to improper installation, and the second was a result of normal wear and tear, not a defect. He also suggested that the owners might have used low-quality diesel filters, which could have contributed to the problem. According to Mr. Zhu, the manufacturer has offered repairs and a 100-day warranty, but replacement is not an option unless proven to be a genuine quality issue.
Police were called to the scene, and one officer, who had previously handled a similar incident in October 2007, arrived to mediate. The officer acknowledged the owners’ frustration but criticized the method of blocking the entrance as unproductive. He encouraged both parties to seek resolution through official channels, such as the technical supervision department, rather than direct confrontation.
By around noon, the vehicles blocking the entrance gradually left. Mr. Mo confirmed that he would pursue legal action if necessary, insisting on resolving the matter through proper legal procedures. The situation highlights the ongoing tension between consumers and manufacturers, especially in cases involving high-value imports and complex warranty policies.
