This year, Caterpillar Marine will deliver the first Carter hybrid propulsion system to an unnamed Singapore shipyard for commissioning. This new propulsion system outperforms diesel mechanical systems under all partial load conditions, greatly improving fuel efficiency and providing full life cycle savings for a variety of offshore support vessels.
Caterpillar pointed out that fuel savings can be as high as 35% per year, especially for ships that are on standby for a long time or provide dynamic positioning services.
Typically, this new propulsion system can be used to reduce the size of the ship's main engine, engine load can be optimized, and it can also be switched to diesel-electric mode for bottom-bottom positioning or standby operations.
For example, Caterpillar's conventional power for a standard 5222 kW power standby support ship may require two MaK 8 M25 C mainframes with 2,666 kW, 750 rpm, and two Cat C18 generator sets. With the new Cat Hybrid Propulsion System, the same ship only needs to use a smaller 6M25C mainframe with 2000 kW, 750 rpm, and 2 supercharged motors to support 2 Cat C32 genset drives. Both the supercharged motor and the drive are directly controllable by the Caterpillar MPC 800A control system, allowing a variety of modes to be selected to provide a single point of interface for the ship operator.
It is reported that the Caterpillar Marine Business Unit believes that the system represents a new market competitor, both for modified vessels and for newbuilding.
