Fast Company recently named Autodesk one of the Best Workplaces for Innovators in 2023, and I couldn’t be prouder. This recognition underscores our commitment to fostering creativity and empowering employees to push boundaries and drive change. At Autodesk, innovation isn’t just a buzzword—it’s woven into everything we do, from how we design our spaces to how we nurture talent.
Take our Flex Forward initiative, for instance. Unlike many companies that enforce rigid return-to-office policies, we took a different path. Flex Forward allows employees to choose where they work—whether from home, an office, or even a café halfway across the globe. However, when we gather in person, it's always intentional. Our offices are designed to support this balance, offering quiet zones for deep work, collaborative areas for brainstorming, and social hubs for connection. To enhance these experiences, we launched the Autodesk Conference Experience (ACE), which acts as a personal concierge for our team events. ACE helps tailor meetings to suit individual preferences, whether it’s arranging seating or organizing icebreakers. This approach has been a game-changer for both productivity and morale.
Jenny Lum, our Director of Global Projects, explains that Flex Forward has become a major draw for top talent, particularly among underrepresented groups. “Diversity fuels innovation,†she says. “By giving employees the freedom to choose where they work, we’re not only attracting more diverse applicants but also ensuring they feel valued and supported.â€
Another standout program is NEXT LEVEL, led by Ramona Blake, our Senior Director of Diversity & Belonging. NEXT LEVEL provides personalized leadership coaching and mentorship to employees of color, helping them prepare for senior roles. The program culminated in a capstone event called “Innovation Idol,†where participants worked in teams to propose real-world solutions using machine learning. Many participants had little prior exposure to ML, yet they quickly adapted and learned to build compelling business cases. For Ramona, this is proof that innovation thrives when everyone has a seat at the table. Over time, these leaders will bring fresh perspectives to our product development and customer interactions.
Christine Stoner, Executive Director of the Autodesk Foundation, highlights another critical aspect of our culture: community engagement. Through a pilot grantmaking program, employee resource groups (ERGs) were empowered to distribute unrestricted funds to causes they cared about. One group chose to support Techbridge Girls, an organization encouraging BIPOC girls to explore STEM fields. Another ERG donated to LatinaGeeks, which promotes tech careers for Latinas. “It’s about trusting our employees to champion initiatives that matter most to them,†Christine explains. “When we invest in their passions, we’re investing in a brighter future for all.â€
These stories are just a glimpse into what makes Autodesk such a vibrant place to work. From reimagining workspaces to elevating diverse voices, we’re constantly evolving to stay ahead. As we look to the future, I’m confident that our dedication to innovation will continue to fuel groundbreaking ideas—not just in tech but across industries. After all, it’s not just about building better tools; it’s about building a better world for everyone.
