According to The Chicago Tribune, the explosion occurred inside a machine at the Arlington Heights facility, which manufactures components for hybrid vehicles. The machine contained a diluted form of potassium hydroxide, a chemical capable of igniting combustible materials if mixed with water or other substances. Fire officials stated that although the chemical fumes posed no immediate threat to nearby residents, the force of the explosion caused debris, including rocks from the roof, to damage approximately 20 parked cars in the vicinity.

Firefighters were alerted around 9 a.m. regarding the incident, and upon arrival, they discovered the building filled with smoke. One employee was found deceased as a result of the explosion. Additionally, ten individuals—seven employees of Arens Controls and three police officers—were transported to the hospital due to respiratory issues. Thankfully, their injuries do not seem to be life-threatening.
