I just received some photos and details from Stephen Wilcox regarding another fire that broke out last month in western DuPage County (part of MABAS Division 12). Here’s what he shared with me:
---
It happened at 419 N. Ellis on June 17th around 4:47 AM. The house, built back in 1900, was a classic balloon-frame structure with lath and plaster walls, along with outdated knob-and-tube electrical wiring. When firefighters arrived, it was warm and humid outside. The fire had already spread throughout the house and into the attic. Neighbors were concerned, thinking there might still be someone trapped inside. This led to an extra-alarm response, requiring multiple handlines and six ground ladders. Thankfully, the family was safe—they were returning from a trip to the Far East.
---
One of the photos shows firefighters starting ventilation efforts on the side of the house while others prepared to enter through the front. You can see Truck Company 417 hard at work cutting into the roof to create openings for better airflow. In another image, a West Chicago firefighter is seen climbing a ladder to clear a second-floor window—readying himself for a "VENT, ENTER, SEARCH" operation. After quickly checking the room, he would move the ladder to the next window and repeat the process.
Another shot captures the intensity of the situation as firefighters comb through the debris post-fire. The caption mentions how members were cleaning up as sunlight streamed onto a nearby 20-story building—the iconic Wheaton Center. Interestingly enough, even though it was daylight, the scene at the fireground remained relatively dark compared to the towering structure behind them.
The final picture highlights the source of the blaze, which originated near the staircase. This location allowed the fire to spread rapidly through the house. It’s always a relief when everyone makes it out safely, especially given the age of the building and its older construction materials.

Stephen’s photos really capture the chaos and focus required during such incidents. Firefighting is no easy task, especially under challenging circumstances like those present here. Thanks again to Stephen for sharing these valuable insights and visuals!
