China's first fully automated laser tailor-welding production line, developed jointly by the Shenyang Institute of Automation under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Japan's IHI, a top 500 global company, has recently been put into operation.
During a visit to the site on the 27th, reporters witnessed the entire process in action. After two steel plates of different thicknesses were automatically fed via a rotating table, two robots swiftly picked them up and placed them on the clamping platform. The plates were then precisely aligned and securely clamped. As the laser head moved linearly across the joint, two 500 mm-long steel plates with varying thicknesses were successfully welded in just 14 seconds. The system's precision is maintained within 0.1 mm—roughly the width of a single strand of hair. The weld itself looked like a smooth black line drawn with a pencil, showing no imperfections.
This fully automated system not only offers high speed and accuracy but also surpasses traditional welding methods in performance. Every stage of the process can be monitored through an intelligent interface, allowing real-time control from anywhere.
Based on the integration and improvement of foreign advanced technologies, this production line has extended the welding length from 1 meter to 1.65 meters, marking a significant technological breakthrough for China in the manufacturing sector. "It will play a crucial role in advancing the technological capabilities of China's steel and automotive industries," said Wang Yuechao, a member of the National 863 Expert Committee and director of the Shenyang Institute of Automation, during the ribbon-cutting ceremony held in Shenyang on the 27th. This achievement highlights China's growing strength in high-tech manufacturing and its commitment to innovation.
