China's first fully automated laser tailor-welding production line, developed jointly by the Shenyang Institute of Automation under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Japan's top 500 company IHI, has recently been launched.
On the 27th, reporters witnessed the operation on-site. After two steel plates of different thicknesses were automatically fed via a rotating table, two robots swiftly picked them up and placed them on the clamping platform. The plates were then precisely positioned and securely clamped. At this point, the laser head moved linearly across the joint, completing the welding of two 500 mm-long steel plates in just 14 seconds. The entire system maintains an accuracy of within 0.1 mm—equivalent to the thickness of a single strand of hair. The weld itself looked like a smooth black line drawn with a pencil, showing no visible imperfections.
This fully automated laser welding process is not only fast and precise but also far surpasses traditional welding methods in quality. Every step of the process can be monitored in real time through an intelligent interface, offering full transparency and control.
Built upon the introduction and integration of advanced foreign technologies, this production line has achieved a significant breakthrough by extending the welding length from 1 meter to 1.65 meters. Its successful development marks a major technological milestone for China in the manufacturing sector.
Wang Yuechao, a member of the National 863 Expert Committee and director of the Shenyang Institute of Automation, emphasized at the ribbon-cutting ceremony held in Shenyang that this innovation will play a crucial role in advancing the technological capabilities of China’s steel companies and automotive manufacturers. This achievement highlights China’s growing strength in high-tech manufacturing and its ability to innovate on a global scale.
