Saturday afternoon, the Palatine Fire Department received a call about a rapidly spreading brush fire in the Cook County Forest Preserve region, located between Lake-Cook Road and Rand Road. Battalion 8 from Palatine, along with Engine 82, quickly set up operations on Dee Road, which runs west of Rand off Lake-Cook. Meanwhile, Lake Zurich's Engine 4 also arrived on the scene to assist.
When they arrived, firefighters discovered the fire raging through tall grass across an area that was mostly marshland, with nearly two feet of soggy ground making it difficult to navigate. Due to these challenging conditions, brush rigs couldn’t be used, and firefighters had to approach the fire on foot until the Cook County Forest Preserve District Wildland Team arrived. They brought several pickups equipped with skid-mounted units, as well as an ATV fitted with a small tank and booster line to help combat the blaze.
The Palatine and Lake Zurich teams stretched hundreds of feet of attack line to tackle what they could reach while protecting nearby residential and commercial properties from potential threats. Photographer Larry Shapiro spent a couple of hours at the scene, capturing several images.
Conditions worsened as high winds fanned the flames, pushing the fire into new areas and making it difficult to fully contain. After Palatine had committed all its suppression resources to the incident and worked for over three hours, they initiated a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) brush fire box alarm to request additional personnel and coverage for their own district.
The fire spread eastward, posing a significant threat to businesses along Rand Road. Firefighters positioned units strategically, including Palatine Engine 82, which was stationed on the property of a car dealership at the intersection of Rand Road and Lake-Cook Road. Engine 82 supplied Quint 81 with 800 feet of attack line to push into the wooded and grassy areas.
Despite the challenging conditions—low humidity, dry vegetation, and strong winds—firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to any structures. By around 10 PM, they successfully contained the blaze and canceled the box alarm.
Larry Shapiro's photos provide a vivid look at the intense firefighting efforts and the harsh environment where the fire raged. More images will be available in a gallery on Sunday, along with a video from the scene. The dedication and teamwork displayed by the firefighters were crucial in preventing further damage and ensuring public safety.
