The Courier-News has a story about firefighters from multiple departments joining forces to sell T-shirts in support of breast cancer awareness:
Firefighters from six local fire departments have come together to raise funds for breast cancer research by selling T-shirts. Meanwhile, Elgin firefighters are running low on their own stock of shirts, which they’ve been selling for the same cause.
This year’s shirt sale is being organized by members of Carpentersville Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 4790. It's the fifth consecutive year that Carpentersville firefighters have participated in this initiative, but it's the first time they've collaborated with other towns, according to Firefighter Tony Ferreiro. Last year, Carpentersville raised $4,500 for the cause, with the money going to breast cancer programs at Presence Saint Joseph and Advocate Sherman hospitals. This year, the goal is to double that amount, with all proceeds going to Advocate Sherman.
Carpentersville firefighter Chad Parker designed the 2014 shirt, which features patches from the six participating departments — Algonquin, Carpentersville, East Dundee, Huntley, South Elgin, and West Dundee — along with a pink ribbon and the IAFF logo. The multi-department T-shirts are available online in men’s sizes, and hooded sweatshirts can also be ordered, with orders accepted until October 31.
A press release from the Carpentersville project notes that firefighters are disproportionately affected by cancer due to exposure to carcinogens and chemicals during their work. With one in eight women expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer each year, the statistics are sobering: an estimated 232,340 new cases and 39,620 deaths were reported in 2014 alone. Moreover, 85% of those affected have no family history of the disease.
In Elgin, the T-shirt initiative holds special significance. Firefighter Josh Soderberg shared how it serves as a reminder of the struggle faced by Lt. Dave Hudik, who lost his wife, Cindy, to breast cancer in April 2011 after battling the disease since late 2006. Since then, Elgin firefighters have sold shirts to the public and even worn a version of them while on duty. So far, they’ve sold around 200 shirts, with another 50 sold at an open house last weekend. Soderberg hopes to expand the effort online next year. Each year, the October T-shirt drive raises roughly $2,000 for the cause.
Carpentersville firefighters have also purchased 300 T-shirts to sell directly at Station 2, located at 305 Lake Marian Road. They’ll also be selling them at a benefit event in November at Rosati’s Pizza, 117 N. Kennedy Drive, though the exact date is still to be announced.
