The Courier-News recently published a story highlighting a heartwarming initiative by firefighters from multiple departments who are working together to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research through the sale of T-shirts.

Firefighters from six local fire departments have joined forces to sell T-shirts, with the goal of supporting breast cancer causes. Meanwhile, Elgin firefighters are running low on their own stock, which they’ve been selling as part of the same effort. The collaborative campaign is being organized by members of Carpentersville Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 4790. This marks the fifth year that Carpentersville firefighters have participated in this cause, but it’s the first time they’re joining forces with other towns, according to Firefighter Tony Ferreiro.

Last year, Carpentersville firefighters raised $4,500, with the funds going to breast cancer programs at Presence Saint Joseph and Advocate Sherman hospitals. This year, the combined effort hopes to double that amount, with all proceeds now directed to Advocate Sherman. The design for the 2014 shirts was created by Carpentersville firefighter Chad Parker, featuring patches from the six participating towns—Algonquin, Carpentersville, East Dundee, Huntley, South Elgin, and West Dundee—as well as a pink ribbon and the IAFF logo.

The shirts are available for online ordering in men’s sizes, and hooded sweatshirts can also be purchased through orders placed before October 31. A press release from the Carpentersville project noted that firefighters are disproportionately affected by breast cancer due to exposure to carcinogens and chemicals during their work. With one in eight women expected to be diagnosed each year, the need for support and awareness remains critical.

In Elgin, the T-shirt initiative has taken on personal significance. Firefighter Josh Soderberg shared how the effort serves as a reminder of the struggle faced by Lt. Dave Hudik, who lost his wife, Cindy, to breast cancer in 2011 after a battle that began in 2006. Since then, Elgin firefighters have sold shirts to the public and worn a version of them while on duty. So far, they've sold about 200 shirts, with an additional 50 sold at an open house last weekend. Soderberg hopes to expand the reach by offering the shirts online next year. Each year, the October T-shirt project raises approximately $2,000 for the cause.

Carpentersville firefighters have also purchased 300 T-shirts, which they're selling directly at Station 2, located at 305 Lake Marian Road. Additionally, they’ll be selling the shirts at a benefit event at a yet-to-be-announced date in November at Rosati’s Pizza, 117 N. Kennedy Drive.
