A series of 9-1-1 calls were received by Northwest Central Dispatch around noon on Monday, reporting a severe rollover accident in the 1600 block of N. Rand Road in Arlington Heights. The location is near the border of Arlington Heights and Prospect Heights, prompting both fire departments to respond with full crews due to the presence of multiple injured individuals and trapped victims.
Five vehicles were involved in the crash, with two drivers requiring rescue from their vehicles. One was freed by Arlington Heights firefighters, while the other was extricated by Prospect Heights units. At the time of the incident, only one of four available Arlington Heights ambulances was on duty, so additional units were dispatched from Prospect Heights, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, and Des Plaines.
One of the drivers did not survive the crash. Emergency personnel from multiple agencies worked together to free the injured and transport them to hospitals. Several photos captured the scene, showing the extent of the damage and the coordinated response.
Photos from Larry Shapiro show a vehicle that appears to have gone airborne after hitting a minivan, as well as firefighters working side by side to save lives. A witness claimed the pickup involved was traveling at high speed in the wrong lane, which may have contributed to the accident.
Both Arlington Heights and Prospect Heights sent multiple units, including engines, ladders, ambulances, and command staff.
