SAN RAFAEL, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADSK), a global leader in design and engineering software, has partnered with CGarchitect, a top online publication and community for design and visualization professionals, to announce the winners of the 2015 Autodesk Excellence in Infrastructure Competition. This annual event highlights innovative uses of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in civil infrastructure projects around the world.
This year’s competition marked its fourth edition, recognizing outstanding BIM applications across various infrastructure sectors. Arup took first place, Ramboll – Parsons Brinckerhoff Joint Venture came in second, and HNTB secured third place for their work on transit and bridge projects. In addition, CivilE, LLC was honored as the small project winner, while Dawn Digital Pvt. Ltd. received the visualization award.
Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President at Autodesk, praised the winning entries, stating, “These projects exemplify how BIM can transform complex infrastructure development by improving collaboration, reducing risk, and enhancing decision-making.†He specifically highlighted Arup's work on the MTR Shatin to Central Link, which involved creating an extensive BIM model integrating GIS data, station designs, and existing structures to manage a large-scale railway expansion in Hong Kong.
The competition, managed by CGarchitect and co-sponsored by Autodesk and HP, received over 40 submissions from around the globe. Entries were evaluated based on technological innovation, sustainability, complexity, and the effective use of BIM throughout the project lifecycle. Winners will be celebrated at the upcoming Autodesk University 2015 conference in Las Vegas this December.
First Place: Arup
Arup was recognized for its work on the MTR Shatin to Central Link, a 17-kilometer railway expansion in Hong Kong. The project included constructing twin tunnels, a new underground station, and ventilation facilities in one of the city’s most densely populated areas. By leveraging BIM, Arup improved coordination, reduced risks, and enhanced communication among stakeholders, demonstrating the power of digital modeling in large-scale infrastructure.
Second Place: Ramboll – Parsons Brinckerhoff Joint Venture
The second-place award went to Ramboll – Parsons Brinckerhoff for the Transport for London Hammersmith Flyover project. This aging bridge required significant strengthening and repair. Using laser scanning and BIM tools like Autodesk ReCap and AutoCAD, the team created highly accurate models that supported precise design and construction planning, ensuring the project met modern safety and efficiency standards.
Third Place: HNTB
HNTB won third place for its role in the Sixth Street Viaduct project in Los Angeles. This unique arch bridge posed significant seismic challenges. HNTB used BIM to coordinate design, structural analysis, and visualization, helping to ensure both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity. The project is expected to enhance the urban landscape and foster stronger community engagement.
Small Projects Award: CivilE, LLC
CivilE, LLC was honored for its work on the Walnut Park Apartment in Austin, Texas. Despite the project’s size, the firm used BIM to streamline collaboration between engineers and architects, allowing for efficient design iterations and better communication. Their success demonstrates how BIM can benefit even small-scale developments, helping firms maximize value within tight budgets.
Visualization Award: Dawn Digital Pvt. Ltd.
Dawn Digital Pvt. Ltd. won the visualization award for its stunning animation of the Godrej BKC office building in Mumbai. The firm combined artistic vision with technical precision to create a compelling visual narrative that showcases the building’s design and functionality. Their work highlights the growing importance of high-quality visualization in architectural presentations.
