From Chi-Town Fire Photos:
I was on scene yesterday around 3:30 AM at 500 W. 26th Street. The fire was in a 3-story ordinary building, approximately 100 by 150 feet. The first-arriving units tried an interior attack but had difficulty locating the seat of the fire. As a result, they shifted to an exterior defensive operation. At the height of the fire, five handlines, several portable ground monitors, Squad 1, AT8, TL5, and TL10 were all deployed in an effort to gain control. I arrived about 45 minutes into the incident. By that time, Engines 8 and 29, along with Trucks 4 and 8, were still operating on the scene.

This was a tough call for the crews involved. The structure was large, and the fire was fast-moving. It’s always a challenge when the initial attack doesn’t go as planned, but the crews adapted quickly and managed to keep it from spreading further. A lot of resources were brought in, and it shows how serious the situation was. The photos from Chi-Town Fire Photos give a good visual of what the scene looked like during the response.
