On Wednesday evening, the St. Charles Fire Department tackled a significant 2nd Alarm fire at Salerno’s on the Fox, a popular restaurant located at 320 N. 2nd Street. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, you can read more about it [here](#), while the Chicago Tribune offers another take [here](#).
Thankfully, no one was injured in this incident. Fire Chief Patrick Mullen stated that the alarm was raised at 5:24 PM, and upon arrival, firefighters noticed thick plumes of smoke billowing from the rear of the single-story building. Chief Mullen noted that the source of the fire appeared to be near the gas meters. "It's as if a blowtorch ignited the situation," he remarked.
The blaze proved particularly challenging due to a ruptured natural gas line, which fueled the flames. Firefighters from ten neighboring departments worked tirelessly, dousing the persistent fire with water for hours.
John Tulipano was on the scene and captured some compelling images of the emergency response vehicles involved. One such image features St. Charles Engine 103, strategically positioned on a nearby hydrant. This apparatus played a crucial role in managing the situation.
Another striking photograph showcases Geneva’s Truck 206, a state-of-the-art Pierce Snorkel, parked just down the block. Geneva also dispatched Engine 208, a robust Pierce Enforcer, adding to the collective effort to control the fire. Elburn & Countryside Engine 302, a Spartan/Alexis top-mount, was similarly stationed in preparation for action.
Batavia joined the response effort as well, sending both their Truck 1—a Pierce Dash tower ladder—and Engine 2, a 2009 Pierce Arrow XT. Despite being prepared, Batavia’s Truck 1 remained unused during the operation.
The Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue Department also contributed resources, deploying Engine 1823, a 1992 Spartan/Alexis 1,250-GPM engine originally from North Park, Illinois. These photos vividly capture the scale and coordination required to manage such a complex fire.
