Prevent Corrosion and Promote the Construction of a Conservation-Oriented Society——An Interview with Executive Vice President and Secretary General of China Industrial Corrosion Protection Technology Association Ren Zhenyu (1)

In recent years, the anti-corrosion industry, once considered a niche sector, has grown to become a vital component across various fields of daily life. To better understand its role and potential, the reporter had an in-depth conversation with Ren Zhenyao, Executive Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the China Association of Industrial Corrosion Prevention Technology. Reporter: With the government emphasizing the development of a resource-saving and environmentally friendly society, what new significance does anti-corrosion work hold for China’s economy and society? Ren Zhenyao: As China faces increasing challenges in resource scarcity and environmental protection, the need for sustainable development has never been more urgent. Traditional economic growth models are still prevalent, and without effective measures, long-term sustainability remains a distant dream. Anti-corrosion is not just a technical solution—it's a practical and feasible approach to building a green and efficient society. Its potential is vast, and it plays a key role in conserving resources, protecting the environment, and ensuring public safety. Corrosion is a universal problem that occurs constantly, often unnoticed. While we can't eliminate it entirely, we can control and slow down the process, thereby extending the lifespan of infrastructure, equipment, and buildings. This not only saves resources but also reduces environmental impact and improves safety. Moreover, as new technologies and materials emerge, the demand for advanced anti-corrosion solutions continues to rise, making corrosion control essential for achieving efficiency, safety, and sustainability. In general, the anti-corrosion industry serves three main functions. First, it helps save resources and improve their utilization. Second, as society develops and people's standards for aesthetics and quality increase, corrosion control now includes enhancing visual appeal and design. Finally, it reflects contemporary values and supports environmental beauty, aligning with modern societal goals. Reporter: What is the current status of China's anti-corrosion industry? Are there any major issues remaining? Ren Zhenyao: The industry currently includes over 3,000 enterprises, generating more than 100 billion yuan annually and employing nearly 1 million people—over 90% of whom are from rural areas. It has become a crucial source of employment, income, and tax revenue for many regions. For example, Changyuan County in Henan Province, known as the "anti-corrosion capital" of China, is now the largest anti-corrosion industrial base in the country. It hosts 21 state-level companies and employs nearly 100,000 people, contributing around 1 billion yuan in labor income each year. Similarly, Xiaoxian County in Anhui, the first county in China’s anti-corrosion industry, has developed into a major regional hub, with 16 companies and over 100,000 employees, producing more than 1 billion yuan annually. However, despite its growth, the industry still faces significant challenges. Corrosion is often overlooked because it is hidden, gradual, and difficult to detect. When damage becomes severe, it can lead to sudden failures with serious consequences. Therefore, raising public awareness and encouraging participation in anti-corrosion efforts is critical. Some companies, especially those with proprietary technologies, mistakenly believe that promoting their products could expose trade secrets. This fear leads to limited public engagement. However, by focusing on the benefits and performance of their products while safeguarding sensitive technical details, companies can minimize risks. This also highlights the need for stronger awareness and support for patent protection among businesses. Additionally, the anti-corrosion industry requires more standardized guidelines. Currently, there are no clear national standards for construction parameters, leading to inconsistent practices. At the same time, the skill level of workers remains low, which affects the quality of projects. Improving training and establishing industry standards will be essential for the future growth of this important sector.
