Anti-corrosion is often considered a niche industry, yet its applications span across all aspects of daily life. To help the public better understand and appreciate this underutilized field, the reporter recently spoke with Ren Zhenyao, the Executive Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the China Association of Industrial Corrosion Prevention Technology. Reporter: With the government promoting a resource-saving and environmentally friendly society, what new significance does anti-corrosion work hold for China's economy and society? Ren Zhenyao: Currently, China faces growing resource constraints and environmental challenges. While economic growth remains extensive, it hasn’t been fundamentally transformed. In the long run, sustainable development can't be just an empty promise. Anti-corrosion plays a key role in building a resource-efficient and eco-friendly society. Its potential is vast and largely untapped. Corrosion is everywhere and happens constantly. Though it’s impossible to completely eliminate, it can be controlled and reduced, extending the lifespan of infrastructure, equipment, and buildings. This helps save resources, protect the environment, and ensure safety and health. Moreover, the development of new technologies and materials is closely tied to advancements in corrosion prevention. Controlling corrosion is essential for achieving efficiency, safety, cleanliness, and sustainability. In general, corrosion protection has three main functions: first, saving resources and improving utilization; second, meeting higher aesthetic and artistic standards as society develops; third, reflecting the spirit of the times and social values, aligning with people's pursuit of environmental beauty. This is the highest level of its function. Reporter: What is the current status of China's anti-corrosion industry? What major issues still exist? Ren Zhenyao: There are over 3,000 companies in the industry, with an annual output value exceeding 100 billion yuan and nearly one million employees, most of whom are rural workers. The industry has become a vital source of employment, income, and fiscal revenue for many regions. Henan’s Changyuan County, known as the "Capital of Anti-Corrosion in China," is one of the birthplaces of the industry. It has now become the largest anti-corrosion industrial base in the country, with 21 state-level enterprises and nearly 100,000 workers. In Anhui Province, Xiaoxian County is the second major anti-corrosion area in China, forming a significant part of the global anti-corrosion industry. Corrosion is universal, hidden, and gradual. It often goes unnoticed until it causes sudden damage, leading to serious consequences. Therefore, raising public awareness and participation in anti-corrosion efforts is crucial. Some companies, especially those with innovative technologies, mistakenly believe that publicizing their products could expose trade secrets. However, by focusing on product benefits and keeping technical details confidential, they can minimize risks. This also highlights the need to strengthen corporate awareness of patent protection. Additionally, anti-corrosion work requires precision, but current national standards are lacking, leading to inconsistent construction practices. The overall skill level of workers is also low, which limits the quality of projects. Improving standards and training will be key to the industry's future development.
