The first large-scale air separation device made in China was successfully launched

The first domestically produced 48,200 Nm³/h air separation unit was successfully launched at the Hubei Fertilizer Plant. This milestone not only marked a significant breakthrough in China's ability to develop large-scale air separation technology but also ended the long-standing reliance on imported systems for such critical infrastructure. The 48,200 Nm³/h oxygen separation plant, part of the coal-to-oil conversion project at the Hubei Chemical Fertilizer Plant, represents an innovative design developed entirely within China. It is the first large-scale air separation unit to be completed and successfully commissioned on the first attempt. The project was implemented under Sinopec’s localization strategy, aiming to enhance domestic capabilities in oxygen production. With numerous mechanical components, complex technological processes, and a high number of DCS control points, the project posed significant challenges. Prior to this, no similar project had been undertaken in China. Supported by Sinopec Group, the Hubei Chemical Fertilizer Plant collaborated with companies like Hangzhou Oxygen Co., Ltd. to overcome technical hurdles and complete the project ahead of schedule. This achievement saved the plant over 100 million yuan in foreign technology introduction costs. Faced with no existing technical data or prior experience, the plant ensured thorough preparation in areas such as organization, staff training, technological development, and material supply. During the commissioning phase, Sinopec dispatched a team of experts to provide on-site guidance. After six days of continuous effort, the plant successfully produced oxygen and nitrogen products, laying a solid foundation for the smooth operation of the Hubei Huafei Coal-to-Oil Project. This project not only demonstrates China’s growing technical independence but also sets a new standard for future large-scale industrial projects in the country.
